About
We are a volunteer campaign that started in Germany in 2026 and is open to everyone, everywhere.
Vision and strategy
We inform people about the effects of AI, with sources, so that they can judge for themselves. We cover the whole range, from today’s models to possible future stages, and we do not warn about one single event.
We inform as neutrally as possible, but we do not hide our position behind a seemingly neutral site: we think AI needs regulation and that its development should slow down, so that not only research but also society can keep pace. How soon and how strictly we ask for this will be decided by our members in a published survey, and every member will set their own limit. Our demand page explains how our position arises.
How we work
- Facts first. Our rule: every claim we make must be backed by a source. If we get something wrong, we correct it publicly.
- Stories for everyone. Different people need different ways in. Our rule: fiction is labelled, and every story links its facts.
- Decentralised. Groups for countries and audiences act on their own, within shared principles.
- Non-violent, lawful, respectful. Always — towards everyone, including the companies and governments we disagree with.
- Open. Unless marked otherwise, our material is free to use and share under CC BY 4.0.
Our name
We rule AI plays on the two senses of “rule”, and we mean both: people should decide about AI, and AI should get rules.
“We” means all of us, not this campaign. Read literally, the name sounds as if people are already in charge of AI. We do not claim that; it is what we want. We do not want to rule anything ourselves: decisions on regulation belong to parliaments and governments. Our members will decide only what this campaign asks for, how soon and how strictly. That AI needs rules and should develop more slowly is set, and we say so.
We are not against AI as such. We think it needs rules, and that people should decide how it is developed and used.
Legal form, leadership and funding
The campaign is not affiliated with any party or company. The people in leadership roles will be named on the team page. Once we can accept money, we will disclose all donations and the origin of all funds here.
Our own use of AI
We use AI agents ourselves, for example to draft texts, check sources and organise our work. People decide and take responsibility, and stories with substantial AI assistance are marked. We consider this justifiable because we inform rather than warn against AI across the board.
